Our chocolate date brownie and learning to pivot 💞
The economic market is creating pressure and shortages on certain ingredients, so we have to get creative 🤝
If you've seen what's going on with chocolate and coffee commodities, then you get it. Prices are running. We can't afford majority organic anymore and we've been dealing with supply issues for a while
Been finding ourselves in a sink or swim moment
Just wanted to say, THIS is a form of alchemy
A sacred dance to stay on our toes and not let the overwhelm swallow us 😆👌
We've been scrappers from day-one though. And we've stayed small enough to have these big changes not bring us down-- ask us about the wildfires in Canada effecting gluten free oat market 😜 been a wild ride the past couple years
I made a decision to grow our business in a different way this year: prune prune prune and focus on deepening the roots
This looks like sourcing quality ingredients from independent places instead of relying so heavily on our wholesale suppliers for goods. This means more variety and inclusion. Our flavors will be more complex and memorable
Also happy to support craft-producers always

keep it secret, keep it safe
Yes, yes this is not bread 😜🤣 this is chichi dango
But the point remains the same
As food creators, our products represent decades of trial and error, play and experimentation, grit and determination
We get asked all the time about sharing our recipes. I usually point customers to recipe developers I like with easy-ish recipes similar to ours
I used to feel bad about this
But that's when I valued myself less and didn't understand that THIS is a medicine journey
Every baked goods you're buying from us represents YEARS of dedication, devotion, and development
You are paying for our unique version of "gluten free" and "vegan" that is wholly different than anyone else's
That 10$ loaf of bread is our livelihood
And it's okay to protect what is yours because you/I/we fought so hard to bring it forward
The idea that artists/healers are meant to share our gifts freely seems so rooted in exploitative capitalism and delusion to me
Want the bread without paying? Do the work 🤷♀️
And the reality is: even if I gave the recipe, it would never be the same because you are not us and we are not you
So...please feel good about a $10 purchase
It will get you 8 to 12 slices of a quality loaf that won't fuck with your gut, doesn't have shit ingredients, and is hearty enough to sustain you through lunch
I am listening to my inner Gandalf: keep it secret, keep it safe 💖
these hands
The things that are made with these hands 🔥 and this heart 💞 the alchemy and mystery
Been feeling called to deeply rest since we got back from our trip to the Big Island and Oahu
I want to pivot the business to cover travel writing and podcasting, but everytime I sit down to be intentional about the process nothing happens. So more sitting for a little while longer until the water is clear and the wind dies down and the dust settles 🌌
We'll be baking today for @hudsonfarmersmarketny on Saturday and @beaconfarmersmarket on Sunday
Love you guys and hope you enjoy the moment of quiet and some reflections on what it's like to run a business and the beauty of the Big Island
